Spiky mountains Bright clouds

Cloud near Diablerets

The clouds always fascinate me, and make me think of my dad who loves to watch them too! Although it meant shooting straight into the sun I just loved the shape of the mountains here (Col de la Croix near Diablerets, Vaud). The sun kept peaking through the dense cloud and made the spiky shapes even more pronounced. Processed in Camera Raw, I decided to keep the brightness in the cloud because it was this brightness that made me stop and take the picture.

Morning sky

Wildstrubel

Taken while climbing up the Wildstrubel glacier, it’s fairly early in the morning and the sky was pretty dramatic. The clouds were gathering more and more, I even felt some snow at one point. Then, as the sun climbed higher in the sky, they all disappeared and the way down was in brilliant sunshine with a glorious blue sky. This shot shows the sun peeking through the clouds and, because of the early morning, it’s almost monochrome in colour. I decided not to convert to black and white because I really like the blues in the sky and in the shadows. Very little post-processing, just a little tweaking of contrast and shadows/highlights in RAW.

Matterhorn

Matterhorn

I’ve still not really gotten close enough to the Matterhorn to take a really good picture but last week I was up on the Wildstrubel glacier and it made a surprise (to me!) appearance. It was a glorious weekend and lots more images to come.

A place of one’s own

A place of one's own

This is a balcony in Sion, Switzerland. We were walking up to the castles and took a few back streets. It was quite a cloudy day but the bright flags, pots and watering can caught my eye. Shot in RAW and then processed in my shiny new CS5, I’ve been so impressed with the programme so far. I was working on CS so it’s a big upgrade but I kind of wish I’d known what I was missing, perhaps then I wouldn’t have chastised myself and my inability to produce the images that I wanted to. I’ve been especially impressed with the work that can be done in Adobe Camera RAW and am pretty sure I don’t need Lightroom now! I’ll post a before picture in comments. All that has been changed is a little shadow and highlight tweak, vibrance and straightening.
